New School Option for Children of Faculty & Staff

As part of UCLA's continuing effort to make life in Los Angeles more affordable and convenient for its faculty and staff, and in support of its recruitment and retention efforts, a new initiative has been launched. TIE-INS (Together In Education In Neighborhood Schools) will enable a limited number of children of UCLA employees to attend three public schools near campus: Nora Sterry Elementary School, Emerson Middle School and University High School.

The initiative, which represents a collaboration between UCLA and the three schools, is also another way in which the University is expanding and strengthening its relationship with the Los Angeles community.

The TIE-INS program is scheduled to begin in September 2009, with as many as 75 openings for children at Nora Sterry Elementary School. Preference will be given to kindergartners and first graders. Their siblings—including those who would enroll in Emerson Middle School or University High School—would also be eligible to participate. All UCLA academic appointees and career (non-probationary) staff at any classification level are eligible to apply.

Detailed information about TIE-INS, Nora Sterry Elementary School and the application process for the program, are available in Related Information. Requests to participate, beginning this fall, must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2009. In the event that employee interest exceeds spaces available, participants will be selected based on priorities indicated by Deans and Vice Chancellors.
