New UC Policy on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS and ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS

Re: New UC Policy on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

Dear Colleagues:

Following extensive university-wide review, President Yudof has issued the new UC Policy on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect, effective July 1, 2013.

The UC Policy is consistent with the regulatory requirements of California’s Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and related amendments. CANRA requires employers to identify Mandated Reporters (individuals who are required to report observed or suspected child abuse or neglect to designated law enforcement officials or social service agencies) and to obtain, as a condition of employment, acknowledgement of their reporting obligations. Please note that the policy includes additional language encouraging “other non-mandated reporters” to report any potential issues through internal channels, such as the University Compliance Hotline 1-800-403-4744.
