Proposed UC Policy on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

The University is proposing to issue a Policy on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect to comply with California’s Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and related amendments that took effect January 1, 2013. CANRA requires employers to identify “Mandated Reporters”; at the University, such positions include but are not limited to healthcare professionals, law enforcement, and athletic coaches, for example.

These “Mandated Reporters” are required under the law to:

  • Report any observed or suspected child abuse to local Child Protective Services offices or law enforcement agencies, and
  • Sign a form acknowledging that they understand this important obligation.

Most aspects of the proposed policy are legally required, and the University is obligated to implement and enforce its provisions. To help assure that any concerns of child abuse or neglect are promptly addressed when identified, the University policy has gone beyond the legal requirements to require internal reports as well.

In accordance with UCLA's process for formal review, employees are encouraged to provide comments on the proposed policy by January 31, 2013.
