Employee-initiated Reduction In Time Program Extended through June 30, 2017

The Employee-initiated Reduction In Time (ERIT) Program has been extended for a three-year period, effective July 1, 2014, through June 30, 2017. The popularity of ERIT has grown since its initial implementation, as it provides employees an option to seek work-life balance and results in savings to departments that participate. Last year alone, the estimated savings for the University of California system reached $6.4 million.

ERIT allows eligible career staff, except Senior Management Group members, to voluntarily reduce their current appointment percentage and corresponding pay. In exchange, employees receive certain specified advantages, such as accrual of vacation and sick leave at the employees’ pre-ERIT rates.

For departments that choose to participate in ERIT, an employee may request the department head's approval to voluntarily reduce working time, within specific limits, from a minimum of one month to a maximum of 36 months. CNA, CUE (CX unit) and UPTE (HX unit) have reached agreements with the University concerning the renewal of ERIT.
