Extension of Policy on Supplement to Military Pay

The Policy on Supplement to Military Pay, which was set to expire June 30, 2014, has been extended through June 30, 2018. The University of California will continue to provide reasonable assistance to academic and staff personnel who are serving on active military duty in the “Overseas Contingency Operations” campaign formerly known as the “War on Terror” in connection with the national state of emergency declared in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Under the policy, the University provides eligible employees with supplemental payments equal to the difference between their University base pay and their military pay and allowances until the end of an employee’s tour of active military duty, until June 30, 2018, or until the separation date of an employee’s University appointment, whichever comes first. The University also continues to pay the UC contribution to the employee’s health plan premiums while an employee is eligible for benefits under the policy. Benefits provided under the policy are subject to a two-year lifetime limit.

Eligible employees under the Policy are those who serve on active military duty during the Overseas Contingency Operations campaign. Employees who are not eligible for supplemental payments because their military pay and allowances exceed their University wages may elect to continue UC health plan coverage while on military leave, and the University will continue to pay the UC contribution to those plans. The systemwide implementation guidelines have been revised to reflect the policy extension and will be published online at http://policy.ucop.edu/.
