CalPERS Long-Term Care Program

Sign up through Sept. 30

Retirement planning is one of the most important steps you can take today to help ensure a financially secure future. While 401k plans, savings accounts and investment portfolios are popular choices, long-term care coverage should be added to the list.

Long-term care is the extended care you might need — because of chronic illness, injury or frailties of old age — with activities like bathing, dressing, or eating. Conventional health plans typically don’t provide extended care.

Unfortunately, many people learn about long-term care when they or a loved one needs it. Planning ahead gives you time to talk with your family about preferences, find out about care options, and give some thought to the types of services that might be most beneficial. And by addressing this issue now, you can create a strategy for how to pay for care so that it doesn’t deplete your financial resources.

The CalPERS Long-Term Care Program is affordable and is an option to consider in your long-term planning. All California public employees (including non-CalPERS members such as employees of the University of California), retirees, their spouses, parents, parents-in-law, and siblings age 18 or older are eligible to apply. Additionally, the younger you are when you apply, the lower the cost of your premiums.

To request an application kit, call (800) 266-1050 or visit the CalPERS website. The application period ends September 30, 2005.
