Policy 50. Professional Development

A department head may support a staff employee’s participation in a developmental program, provided that the employee has completed the probationary period, if required, and performance is satisfactory or better.

Options for Department Support

Required Program Attendance
When employee attendance at a training or development program is required by the department, attendance at the program is counted as time worked, and fees and related costs, such as materials, travel, and per diem, shall be paid by the department. Continuing Education courses for the maintenance of State licenses are not automatically considered professional development programs and do not necessarily qualify for fee reimbursement.

Professional Development Leave
A regular status employee may be granted leave at full or part pay to engage in educational and development activities which support the interests of the University, or are related to the employee’s job, professional, technical or managerial skills. Advance approval by department head must be obtained. Approval is subject to scheduling, staffing and budget considerations.
