Enrich Your Career through the Staff Enrichment Program

Applications for 2007 Program Now Being Accepted

If you’re interested in putting your professional development on the fast track, then take an interest in UCLA’s Staff Enrichment Program (SEP). Designed to broaden career opportunities for employees, the program helps develop participants’ skills through topical seminars, team projects, career coaching, department-related presentations and professional-portfolio guidance, to name just a few of the effective components.

“Participating in SEP gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities,” says David Riley, Administrative Specialist, Earth & Space Sciences. “UCLA is a great place to work, and the program helped me take advantage of the tremendous opportunities available at the University.” So much so, David recently enjoyed a promotion, of which he partly attributes to the career-building tools he learned in SEP.

With an alumni roster topping 700, SEP participants come from a wide variety of departments on campus. It is this blending of backgrounds, work experiences and skill sets that creates a learning environment unique to the program and allows for a more expansive view of the University’s culture, organizational structure and career opportunities.

“Our goal is to retain a diverse group of employees who have a high level of motivation and initiative and give them the opportunity to do the best work they can for the University,” explains Elizabeth Monaco, SEP Program Coordinator.

Daniel Cheng is just one example of how the program is achieving its goal. “I learned the value of establishing and nurturing communication avenues whenever and wherever possible,” says Daniel, Staff Research Associate II, Epidemiology, School of Public Health, who, like David, has been promoted. “I made friends and professional contacts from diverse backgrounds and work areas on campus. This helps humanize the University environment and encourages excellence.”

The yearlong program requires departmental support for participants of approximately 10 hours of release time each month to attend skill-building events. Eligibility for SEP includes the following:

  • Full-time career employment for at least one year
  • Payroll title of Administrative Specialist (or equivalent) or below
  • Satisfactory rating or better on most current performance evaluation
  • Department endorsement for participation
