Summer is a great time to focus on skill building and professional development. The following are highlights of upcoming workshops in July. We look forward to seeing you in class!

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT:

Advanced Accounting I - This is a course for supervisors and managers and utilizes case studies of real-life examples to reinforce accounting practices. Topics include fund accounting concepts; sources of UC revenue and restrictions; cash management and STIP UCLA Foundation endowments, gifts, grants and pledges; FS and related subsystems. Class meets on July 29th.

SUPERVISORY DEVELOPMENT:

Effective Interviewing Skills - Making the right choice when hiring staff is a key supervisory responsibility. Participants in this class will learn how to create an applicant profile, develop and use behavioral based questions, and use a tool to effectively assess candidates after the interview. This meets a course requirement for the Supervisory Certificate. Class is offered on July 27th.

TECHNOLOGY and SOFTWARE:

Access - This is a powerful database management system. Learn how to design databases, queries, forms and reports, and how to edit, add and delete records in a database. Class is on July 20th.

Excel - Learn about the spreadsheet and database capabilities of Excel – and how to use worksheet command, formulas, the toolbar, and formatting, copying and moving cells. Classes are scheduled on July 8th and 14th.

Word - Take full advantage of one of the most widely used word processing programs. Learn how to edit and move text, use character and paragraph formats, set margins tabs and columns, create form letters and envelopes, and use Auto Text. Class is scheduled on July 22nd.

NEW - Introduction to the UC Learning Center -  Learn more about the new learning management system. Topics include: navigating the interface, registering and cancelling, entering payment information, viewing your training transcript, completing course evaluations, and accessing required training. Offered July 9th, 13th, and 15th.

NEW - Enrolling and Managing Others in the UC Learning Center - This course is limited to UCLA employees who either have direct reports or who have been authorized to manage training enrollments and records for their department. Instructor approval is required. Introduction to the UC Learning Center is strongly recommended as a prerequisite to this class. Topics include: enrolling other users in training, viewing training transcripts, required training, and training schedules; and viewing and exporting the exception report for required training (e.g. Sexual Harassment or Ethics). Offered July 9th, 13th, 21st, and 23rd.

COMMUNICATION:

Public Speaking and Presentation Skills - Covers the basic principles of public speaking, including: language and delivery; presentation organization and outlining; audience awareness; visual aids and nonverbal communication. Participants will have an opportunity to practice giving articulate, well-planned presentations. Class is scheduled for July 28th.
